ABSTRACT

The thesis stretches from Derrida’s Deconstruction to reveal his thought on

Deconstructive translation theory. Theoretical key terms including differance,

play of trace, dissemination & supplement are taken for detailed discussion.

Derrida deconstructs a text, carefully reinterpreting traces that overlapping each

other, which means to pay close attention to the so-called intertextuality. Since

any text is no longer a completed whole writing. Text is a web constituted of

various differances, a structure made up of different traces. The process of

translation is a process to endlessly pursue and erase traces, to disseminate, graft,

rewrite and supplement and so on in the “differance” chain of writing, indicating

a semantic multiplicity which is uncertain and beyond reversion. The thesis then

draws the principles of semantic multiplicity and undecidability, text’s

relationship with context and the relationship between original and translation to

shed light on Derrida’s thought on translation practice. Finally, by comparing the

English and German translations of Mao Zedong’s ditties, the thesis applies

Derrida’s theory into practice and makes attempts to show how semantic

undecidability is presented in two different languages and how the theme is

differently interpreted in different cultures and literary traditions and thus let

translation live more and better than the original.
