ABSTRACT

The thesis shows how George Eliot balances and reconciles feminism and realism

through an analysis of her views on marriage in Middlemarch. The thesis shows how

Eliot’s personal experience and her attitude toward the feminist movement and

prevailing 19th century social values inform her writing. For over a hundred years,

critics have been debating whether or not Eliot was a feminist. Although she led a

controversial life and openly lived for over twenty years with a married man, she still

defended the sanctity and value of marriage. She argued that marriage’s influence on

women was not, as most feminists insisted, so negative. Through a study of Dorothea,

Rosamond and Celia’s marriages in Middlemarch, the thesis traces and explores

Eliot’s nuanced perspective on marriage. The conservative attitude embodied in her

works and her ambiguous attitude toward feminism have drawn severe criticism from

feminists, who have excluded her from favor as a reactionary and Victorian moralist.

After all, one thing is certain-- Eliot was a great realistic writer, not only for her acute

observations of 19th century European society, but also for her sophisticated critique of

limitations in radical feminism.
