Abstract
Pragmatics is the study of meaning in context. It deals with particular utterances in particular situations and is especially concerned with the various ways in which many social contexts of language performance can influence interpretation. Tautology has certain pragmatic value and significance for the purpose of better understanding of the utterance. It also concludes the implicit meaning with favorable declension and unfavorable declension. Besides the attitudes involved are relevantly different according to the contextual environment. There are nine kinds of different attitudes, which are presented with typical examples as well as detailed analysis in this article.
The main content of the paper is to analyze tautology from the following two aspects: 1. A is A has the implicit meaning with favorable declension; 2. A is A has the implicit meaning with unfavorable declension. And further analysis will focus on various attitudes involved in each above-mentioned case according to the context situations. When a sentence or a phrase is presented, the speaking environment is especially important.
